Unit In Profile: King's Own Commando Regiment
Members of the Marine Battalion conducting an amphibious landing
The King's Own Commando Regiment a unit of the Royal Luthorian Army that serves in dual roles, as both elite conventional infantry and a special operations force, which includes serving as light infantry, and serving as support for the Ranger Wing. The Commando Regiment also engages in direct action, long-range/behind enemy lines reconnaissance, search and rescue, and humanitarian assistance missions as well as light raids. The Commandos constantly maintain a high alert and are expected to be able to deploy anywhere on Giess.
Members of the Parachute Battalion on a jungle warfare exercise
The Commando Regiment is divided into two battalions, each specializing in a separate method of infiltration. The 1st Battalion, also known as the Parachute Battalion, are, as their name implies, airborne infantry. They are trained in jungle warfare, multiple types of parachute drops and air assault, working closely with the Royal Luthorian Air Force. The 2nd Battalion is the Marine Battalion. The Marine Commandos are primarily an amphibious assault force, working in concert with the Navy, but are also considered specialists in arctic and mountain warfare, and heavily involved in exploration efforts.

The Commandos are well-known for their rigorous selection process and intensive training methods. All prospective commandos have served previously in infantry units for at least 2 years and are at least 21 years of age. Prospective Commandos all attend the Pre-Commando Course, which lasts three weeks and is intended to weed out those who are unfit for commando service; consisting of interviews and tests to assess medical and mental health, as well as intellectual aptitude and physical fitness.
Soldiers attending the Commando Initiation Program
Afterwards, they attend the Commando Initiation Program, which lasts 18 weeks and trains them in special skills that they will need to make use of as commandos. Once they graduate from the Program, they divide into Parachute School and Marine School, each a 6 week course, which specialize in commando skills that will be emphasized depending on their chosen battalion. Then they will go on to specialized schools (Jungle Warfare School for Parachute Commandos, and Arctic & Mountain Warfare School for Marine Commandos). Once these courses are completed, both Marine and Parachute Commandos attend a code-named week-long military exercise. Though the details of this exercise cannot be revealed, this is considered the final step to becoming Parachute or Marine Commandos.
